What about me? It isn’t fair….
Steph's Showreel
Storytelling time…
Yes, that is me with Michael Bublé in one of the photos above. I had the surreal experience of being a backing vocalist on his Australian tour in 2010. Quite the whirlwind, I must say!
You may have watched the video above of a few of my shows. It's the only footage I have, thanks to the tech limitations back in the day and those pesky copyright restrictions. And these performances were all before I had the glory of the Estill Model to save me… please excuse the vocal issues throughout… Ah, nostalgia!
Let me take you back to when I was a curious 16-year-old in Melbourne. I was already working as a singer professionally in kids choruses and shows when I landed lessons with a highly reputed voice teacher. I was beyond thrilled, but it didn’t take long for my bubble to burst. You see, I had a million questions about how the voice works—how breathing and the abdominal wall play into it, why the throat seems to vibrate even though we’re told not to "sing on the throat," and so on. One day, she mentioned a resonator between the brain and the top of the skull, where apparently “head voice” was amplified, which baffled me. Being the pre-Google era, I hit the library and discovered no such resonator existed. When I brought this to her, she was not pleased. Let’s just say our lessons ended swiftly after that, but it ignited my lifelong quest for vocal truth.
Fast forward, and I was knee-deep in the world of Opera at Melbourne Uni and the VCA Opera Studio. Even though my ‘to die for passion’ was contemporary musicals, and singing lead in bands, I was constantly warned about "ruining" my voice. One day, the DEAN caught me belting out a Miss Saigon song, leading to all kinds of drama and warnings. But I kept going, performing in operas with OA before joining the Australasian Hello Dolly Tour and waving goodbye to the opera scene. I only did it to play Carlotta one day! Dreams can come true…..
In my late twenties, I discovered Estill Voice Training. At that time I was heading off to Germany to do Cats, where I heard rave reviews about Estill. I was still searching for the solutions to my vocal issues such as my break and belting, and all I was getting from teachers in Europe was more confusing classical training advice (like being told my abs were the key to belting or like a woman in Paris who punched me in the stomach to show me). I was determined to learn more. My first Estill lesson was a game-changer, solving many vocal issues and fuelling my passion for teaching again.
After becoming a parent, I left touring and threw myself into Estill certification, travelling far and wide to learn from the best. Now, I’ve been teaching EVT to everyone from kids to seasoned voice teachers for over 17 years. At Monash Uni, I teach voice mechanics and evidence-based practice methods in the Popular Music Degree program, helping teachers and coaches retrain their voices and guide their students.
My journey has been wild, from teaching dancers singing confidence as a teen to building a career using Estill Voice Training. Obsessed with singing every genre, I use EVT to translate and learn from top teachers in contemporary voice and explore new styles, keeping my passion for voice alive and fun.
Oh! And did I mention that when I went to Germany to do Cats, I met an Austrian Rum Tum Tugger who was quite the charmer? After gallivanting through shows and towns together across Europe, I decided to steal him! We tied the knot, had two kids, and he's still here in Australia 20 years later. He's also an EMCI-TP-SD and the 1st Year Coordinator at Monash Uni. Talk about a plot twist, right? Do I hear an awwww?
(The pic on the video cover is Gerald and me in Cats Denmark - He was Munkastrap in this photo, and I was Griz… Memories….. light the corners of my mind… oh, wrong song… )
Ok… So obviously she could go on for hours… Let’s get back to it, shall we?

What People Are Saying
“Steph was a fantastic instructor. She was able to concisely and clearly explain quite complex concepts and then her ability to physically demonstrate every aspect was both impressive and immensely helpful. Her warm and inviting teaching style also created a safe, supported environment where everyone felt comfortable to try new things with their voice.”
— Caitie Houghton
SLP and MT Performer (Wicked NZ)
“Steph was truly inspiring. Day one, blow us out of the room in the first 5 minutes with ear drum beating vocal "power". I thought that was it. But no, fantastic inspiring vocal athletics all the time. So satisfying. Steph doesn't make them 'seem' easy. She makes them 'be' easy. Loved it! What a brilliant lady. I feel I was in the hands of an expert.”
— Miss Maria Eaton
